Definition | A laboratory instrument that primarily determines total carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen in a sample but may also measure total sulphur and oxygen. Flash combustion is used to convert all organic and inorganic substances into combustion products. The resulting combustion gases pass through a reduction furnace and are then swept into the chromatographic column by a carrier gas where they are separated and detected. |
