Definition | A free flushing sample bottle of 1-5 litre capacity comprising a glass, metal or plastic tube with a hinged lid at each end. The bottle is deployed on a wire with the lids held open. When the bottle reaches the target depth a weighted messenger is sent down the wire and releases the lids, sealing the sample in the bottle. The bottle was designed by H Friedinger (Lucerne, Switzerland) to collect water samples for plankton analysis. |
