| Definition | This group incorporates the parameters relating to the fatty acid content of sediment or suspended particulate material. Contents are expressed either as 'concentrations' (SPM fatty acid per unit volume of water) or 'contents' (quantity of fatty acid per unit mass of sediment or SPM). Fatty acids are considered as the naturally occurring continuous chain, saturated and unsaturated aliphatic acids. In their ester form these are the constituents of the fats, waxes and oils of plants and animals. Simpler carboxylic acids with an alkyl or alkenyl group, sometimes loosely termed 'fatty acids' are not included. | ||
