| Definition | An array of hydrophones towed on one or more cables behind a vessel that is used to detect sound waves in aquatic environments. Applications include seismic exploration, passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals, monitoring of underwater noise, and military surveillance. Each streamer typically has multiple hydrophones placed at set intervals along the cables and streamers can be deployed at the same depth or at different depths depending upon the application. A separate data logger and specialised software may be used to record and process the acoustic signals detected by the deployed hydrophones. This term should only be used where the application of the streamers is unknown and where the streamers are not a part of a larger seismic reflection system. | ||
