| Definition | A stationary, underwater listening station that uses hydrophones and specialised software to detect, monitor, and analyse the sounds of marine animals and other ocean phenomena without disturbing the environment. These systems are deployed for extended periods and record acoustic data from a fixed location on the seafloor to understand long-term acoustic trends in an area. The data is collected and analysed after the mooring is retrieved. A PAM system will typically consist of one or more hydrophones, a data logger and storage to save the recorded acoustic data. The hydrophones are suspended in the water column between an anchor weight and a buoyant float. Systems may also have a satellite transmitter to allow real-time data transmission. | ||
