YOYO Repeated continuous profiles The series has a set of measurements at a fixed position with elevation continuously varying (values potentially different for each oscillation) over time. QXF must include both a time channel and a z co-ordinate channel on the primary (rank 1) dimension along with the data parameters. Examples are wire-crawler moorings and repeated CTD casts that have neither been binned nor split into discrete profiles. Position is held in metadata. 2014-12-17

SPPOINT Single point Point time series The series has a single set of measurements at a fixed position, elevation and time. Time and data parameters are stored along the primary dimension (rank 1). Position and the z co-ordinate (depth or height) are stored in metadata. This is to cover series that would be a time series i.e. POINT if there was more than one point. 2018-09-20
SPDPROF Single point Profile with depth The series has a single set of instantaneous measurements at a fixed position and elevation. Z co-ordinates are included along the primary dimension (rank 1) as depth. Time and position are stored as metadata. This is to cover series that would be a profile if there was more than one point. 2018-09-20
SPPPROF Single point Profile with pressure The series has a single set of instantaneous measurements at a fixed position and elevation. Data and z co-ordinate (as pressure) are included along the primary dimension (rank 1). Time and position are stored as metadata. This is to cover series that would be a profile if there was more than one point. 2018-09-20
SPPDPROF Single point Profile with pressure and depth The series has a single set of instantaneous measurements at a fixed position and elevation. Z co-ordinates are included along the primary dimension (rank 1) as both pressure and depth. Time and position are stored as metadata. This is to cover series that would be a profile if there was more than one point. 2018-09-20
SPTRAJ Single point Trajectory The series has measurements at a single fixed elevation, position and time. Time and horizontal spatial (e.g. latitude and longitude) coordinates together with data are stored along the primary dimension (rank 1). The z co-ordinate (depth or height) is stored in metadata. This is to cover series that would be TRAJ if there was more than one point. 2018-09-20
SPGRID Spatial Grid The series has one set of measurements per parameter stored in a 2-D array described by two co-ordinate variables that are horizontal spatial co-ordinates (e.g. latitude and longitude) with longitude along the primary dimension (rank 1) and latitude along the secondary (rank 0). Measurements could either be a single time-snapshot or considered time-independent. 2014-12-17
SPECPROF Spectrum profile The series has a set of measurements at a fixed position and time but varying depths. Each measurement constitutes a spectrum with a non-spatial variable (e.g. grain size or bin number) on the secondary dimension (rank 0). The primary dimension (rank 1) includes a z co-ordinate (depth). Time and position are held as metadata. 2014-12-17
SPTRAJ3D Spectrum three-dimensional trajectory The series has a set of measurements at variable times, depths and locations. Each measurement constitutes a spectrum with a non-spatial variable (e.g. grain size or bin number) on the secondary (rank 0)dimension. The primary (rank 1) dimension includes position, time variables and depth variable. 2014-12-17
SPECSER Spectrum time series The series has a set of measurements at a fixed position and multiple but fixed z co-ordinate values that are not elevation (e.g. frequency or size class) varying with time. TRAJ3D Three Dimensional Trajectory The series has measurements at independently varying position and elevation as a function of time. Time, horizontal (e.g. latitude and longitude) and vertical (e.g. depth/height) coordinates together with data are stored along the primary dimension (rank 1). 2D trajectories may be stored as this feature type by including a z co-ordinate array set to a constant value. 2014-12-17
TRAJ Trajectory The series has measurements at a single fixed elevation varying with both position and time. Time and horizontal spatial (e.g. latitude and longitude) coordinates together with data are stored along the primary dimension (rank 1). The z co-ordinate (depth or height) is stored in metadata. 2014-12-17
2DSPCSER Two-dimensional spectrum time series The series is a time series of measurements in which each measurement has two dimensions such as directional wave spectra. In CF-compliant NetCDF this example data type would be stored in a 3D array with co-ordinates time, frequency and direction. As QXF is limited to two dimensions the data are stored in a 2D array with time as a rank 1 variable and two rank 0 variables (frequency and direction) that are both required to describe a single row. So, for directional wave spectra with 10 frequencies, 10 direction bins and 50 time steps the CF array would have dimensions (50,10,10) and the QXF array (50,100). Position and z co-ordinate are stored in metadata. 2016-12-06
VPRFCOLL Variable-depth profile collection The series has a set of measurements along a trajectory (variable times and locations) at multiple depths that can possibly vary from measurement to measurement. Each measurement constitutes a spectrum with a non-spatial variable (generally bin number) on the secondary (rank 0) dimension. The primary (rank 1) dimension includes position and time variables. The z co-ordinate (depth or height) is carried with the data variables as 2D (rank 2) arrays. 2014-12-17
VPRFSER Variable-depth profile time series The series has a set of measurements over time at a fixed point (position stored in metadata) and at multiple depths that can possibly vary from measurement to measurement. Each measurement constitutes a spectrum with a non-spatial variable (generally bin number) on the secondary (rank 0) dimension. The primary (rank 1) dimension includes the time variable. The z co-ordinate (depth or height) is carried with the data variables as 2D (rank 2) arrays. 2014-12-17
