|Definition||The Sub-Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) is a passive microwave limb sounder designed to detect molecular chemical species in the high atmosphere for astronomical and atmospheric research such as depletion of the ozone layer and the effects of global warming. SMR observes thermal emissions radiating from Earth's limb using a 1.1 m telescope. The instrument employs four tunable single-sideband Schottky diode heterodyne receivers, as well as two high resolution auto-correlator spectrometers. The main target species tracked by SMR are O3, ClO, N2O, HNO3, H2O, CO, and isotopes of H2O and O3. A typical stratospheric mode scan covers the altitude range from 7 to 70 km. Measurements cover the latitude range 82.5 degrees South to 82.5 degrees North. Profile information is retrieved from the calibrated spectral measurements of a limb scan by inverting the radiative transfer equation for a non-scattering atmosphere. Optimized retrieval schemes based on the Optimal Estimation Method (OEM) have been developed and implemented for level 2 processing. SMR has a receiver at a wavelength of 3 mm and an additional four bands within the submillimeter range (0.5 - 1.0 mm), corresponding to a frequency range of 486 - 580 GHz.
