| Definition | This group incorporates all state variables pertaining to phytoplankton (defined as free-floating autotrophic organisms smaller than 200 microns). Most parameters in this group express the abundance, either as cell counts or biomass, of various species, genera or less rigorous classifications of phytoplankton. However, the group also includes parameters that describe other properties of these entities that are not rates or fluxes , such as cell surface area or volume. The grouping includes phytoplankton abundance parameters in the water column, in sediment samples or in sediment trap samples. | |
