Definition | Deep muds, especially in sealochs, which support populations of seapens such as Virgularia mirabilis and Pennatula phosphorea, but sometimes also with forests of the nationally scarce Funiculina quadrangularis. The sediment is usually extensively burrowed by crustaceans, the most common of which is Nephrops norvegicus, but Callianassa subterranea may also be present (the latter is likely to be under-recorded by grab sampling because it is deep burrowing). Lesueurigobius friesii is present at many sites. Amphiura spp. are usually present in high densities. | |
