Definition | Very sheltered areas of mid eulittoral rock that are subject to strong to moderate tidal streams, such as the narrows in sealochs, are characterised by Ascophyllum nodosum with a rich associated fauna of sponges and ascidians. Species richness is generally greater than in the non tide-swept Ascophyllum nodosum biotope (Asc.Asc), with a greater abundance and wider range of foliose and filamentous red algae such as Gelidium pusillum, Mastocarpus stellatus, Chondrus crispus, Lomentaria articulata and Membranoptera alata. The increased water movement encourages several filter-feeding groups to occur. The sponges Leucosolenia spp., Halichondria panicea and Hymeniacidon perleve frequently occur on steep and overhanging faces of boulders and bedrock. Large numbers of ascidians, especially Dendrodoa grossularia and Ascidiella scabra, also occur on steep surfaces and beneath boulders. | |
