Definition | Net deployments designed to collect animals or debris floating on the surface or in the upper few centimeters of the water from a moving platform. The net is towed horizontally at one depth and samples half in and half out of the water. Occasionally neuston nets can be stacked vertically in the water column to sample as deep as 100 cm. For examples, see Wiebe and Benfield 2003, Plates 20 and 21. | |
