Definition | A smartphone-mounted spectropolarimeter suitable for above-water measurements. The iSPEX 2 can be mounted to a smartphone and a picture taken of the water surface. Data of the intensity and polarisation of light at different wavelengths are collected and analysed to output information on the concentration of materials such as chlorophyll a, dissolved inorganic matter, and particulate matter. This sensor measures the polarised intensity of light in two orthogonal directions (horizontal and vertical polarisation). Wavelengths are measured hyper-spectrally from 390-700 nm at approximately 9 nm resolution (exact figures are dependent on the smartphone used). The iSPEX 2 works by using two slits alongside each other, letting light through from a single direction. This is modulated by a set of SPEX optics which encode the polarisation information into the spectrum as light and dark bands. A grating disperses the light onto a smartphone camera in the form of two spectrums of light with opposing light/dark bands. The smartphone camera registers these data, and they are processed using SPECTACLE app, a standardised methodology and database for spectral and radiometric calibrations of consumer cameras. | ||
