Definition | An alpha spectrometer designed for high-resolution analysis of alpha-emitting radionuclides and used for environmental monitoring, nuclear research and forensics, and healthcare assessments. The instrument has a modular design and can accomodate up to 6 Dual Spectrometer modules with Passivated Implanted Planar Silicon (PIPS) detectors and two vacuum chambers per module. The interactions as alpha particles from the sample strike the semiconductor material produce charge pulses which are proportional to the energy of the alpha particles. The pulses are converted to voltage and seen as peaks in the associated software. The instrument features automatic recoil suppression control, a clean vent port to reduce moisture and contamination buildup in chambers, a manual emergency venting valve, and Apex Alpha software for complete computer control. A range of detector sizes are available up to a maximum of 1200 mm squared. Based on use with a 450-18AM PIPS detector and a good quality Americium-241 point source: energy resolution <18 keV (full width at half maximum, FWHM) with a detector-source spacing equal to the detector diameter, detector efficiency >25% for detector-source spacing of less than 1 mm, and background < 1 count/hr above 3 MeV. | ||
