Definition | An instrument assembly of thermistors incorporated within a heavy-duty cable. The assembly is environmentally hardened for long-term temperature monitoring under demanding conditions such as burial, deployment in boreholes, or deployment underwater. Each thermistor string is custom manufactured to user specifications with the number of thermistors, spacing between thermistors, sensor accuracy, and length/type of cable differing between instruments. The Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistors are non-linear thermistors that experience a drop in resistance with increasing temperature. The measured resistance readings can be converted to temperature using the Steinhart-Hart Linearization equation. Thermistors are curve-matched to desired temperature tolerance over selected temperature ranges, permitting the use of multiple sensors with a single readout or temperature logger. The operating temperature range is -80 degC to 75 degC and the stability is 0.01 degC or better over 100 months at 0 degC. The strings incorporate a triple encapsulation procedure to prevent water ingress and are tested to withstand pressures up to 3.5 MPa. The thermistor resistance rating at 25 degC is 3k ohms as standard, but other options available include 2252, 5k or 10k ohms. | ||
