| Definition | A sharpened metal box used to collect sediment cores. This is a useful and highly cost-effective sampling method for the uppermost few centimetres of the sediment profile. The monolith tin is inverted over the surface at the location selected and pushed down until it contains a monolith of the required length. A trench is then excavated to expose enough of the tin to allow a metal sheet to be inserted horizontally beneath, so that it cuts through the sediment at the base of the monolith and covers the open end of the tin. The tin, monolith and metal sheet are then lifted out together. It can work well down to 0.5-1m. However, this method becomes increasingly destructive as sampling depth increases. | ||
