Definition | The FastCam system is an automated imaging-in-flow instrument that generates high-resolution digital images for measuring size and shape of microscopic particles. An LED driven by a control box emits light pulses of 5 µs duration. Light is injected into a large core diameter (1 mm) optical fibre to homogenize the beam. Light out of the optical fiber illuminates a flow cell (or flow chamber). A 10X magnification microscope objective associated with a tube lens images the organisms that circulate in the flow cell on a camera. The frame grabbing is synchronized with the LED emission. The FastCam is an imaging-only system (i.e. without excitation wavelength or fluorescence emission wavelengths). The camera is high-resolution (2 Megapixels) and can capture up to 340 frames/second. It can image particles between 10µm and 1mm, can analyse in vivo or fixed samples, and has a sampling rate of 54ml/h. | ||
