Definition | A manually operated instrument that is used to collect sediment via suction. The sampler consists of a closed chamber with a detachable lid and screw threads on the inside to facilitate the attachment and detachment of mesh sampling bags. Air is supplied from a compressed air cylinder, fitted with a pressure-reducing valve and connected to the sampler via a short length of reinforced tubing. The sampler is operated underwater by divers. | |
