Definition | A gravity corer with an internal tube diameter of 90mm, designed for undisturbed sampling of soft sediment from the sea floor. The GEMAX corer is an evolution of the GEMINI corer (itself a development from the Niemistö corer, 1974); both consist of twin steel core barrels, though the GEMAX has a larger core-barrel diameter and an added peeler facility in the slicer unit, implemented to limit sample contamination without loss in sample volume. Optimum penetration of 50-60 cm into the seabed can be achieved in soft muddy sediments at wire speed of 1 m/s and two standard weights. | ||
