Definition | The ThermoQuest Finnigan Trace Mass Spectrometer (MS) is an analytical laboratory instrument that identifies and quantifies chemical compounds. An ion source converts the sample molecules into ions using Electron Ionisation (EI) or Chemical Ionisation (CI+ and CI-), which then pass into the quadrupole mass analyser which separates the ions, the detector then measures their mass-to-charge ratio and intensity. Pure samples may also be injected directly into the MS. The instrument is not suited to dealing with mixtures of compounds, therefore it is usually coupled with a gas chromatograph (typically a ThermoQuest Trace 2000 GC) which separates the compounds first. The Finnigan Trace MS was originally manufactured by ThermoQuest which has since been replaced by Thermo Scientific (part of Thermo Fisher Scientific). This model is no longer in production. | ||
