| Definition | In invertebrates, the abdomen is the posterior body segment that contains most of the digestive and reproductive organs. The vertebrate abdomen is the body cavity located behind the ribcage and in front of the pelvic cavity, enclosed by muscles and the vertebral column. It contains vital organs from systems like the digestive (e.g. stomach, intestines), urinary, and others, which are protected by the abdominal muscles and separated from the thoracic cavity by the diaphragm. | |
