Definition The rate at which a given substrate is assimilated by organisms and respired as carbon dioxide. In the BODC PUV semantic model, this property should only be used in combination with an organic substrate like e.g. leucine. The respiration rate of entire organisms or systems should be expressed as either the consumption rate of oxygen or the production rate of inorganic carbon.
