| Definition | An academic institution located at the University of California, San Diego. It specialises in the biological, physical, chemical, geological, geophysical and climate studies of the oceans and earth. It was originally founded in 1903 as the Marine Biological Association of San Diego, before it was merged with the University in California in 1912 (Scripps Institution for Biological Research). It changed its name to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1925. It maintains several oceanographic research vessels including the RV Roger Revelle. | ||
