Definition | An integrated optical system designed to measure Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) and Natural Fluorescence (the fluorescence from phytoplankton stimulated by available sunlight). This system can be deployed from small vessels or inflatables. It can measure natural fluorescence, scalar irradiance of PAR (400-700 nm), water temperature, and depth to 100 m. Unlike strobe fluorometers, a natural fluorometer measures fluorescence emitted under the ambient light conditions that are driving photosynthesis in situ. The instrument has a depth range of 200 m and an operating temperature range of -5 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius. | |
