Definition | A series of 3-axis wind sensors utilising ultrasound to determine horizontal wind speed and direction. The instrument operates under the principle of measuring the transit time of ultrasound from one transducer to another. The transit time is measured in both directions for a pair of transducer heads, using two measurements for each of the three ultrasonic paths at 60 degree angles to each other. From this, the instrument computes wind speed and direction. The WMT700 series of anemometers have a measurement range of 0 - 90 m/s for wind speed depending on the model, all with a resolution of 0.01 m/s. The instruments have an observational range for wind direction of 360 degrees, a resolution of 0.01 degrees, and an accuracy of +/- 2 degrees. | |
